Can a Foreigner Join the USA Army?
Enlistment in the military is possible for non-citizens. Non-citizens, on the other hand, are not permitted to serve as a commission or warrant officers under federal law.
To enlist in the military, a non-citizen must first be a legal immigrant (with a green card) who has permanently lived in the United States.
The green card, which stands for Permanent Resident Card, is valid for ten years and must be renewed every ten years.
The card is issued by the Department of Homeland Security’s Citizenship and Immigration Services and includes a photo and fingerprint. The green card used to be green, but nowadays it resembles a driver’s license.

US Army Recruitment Requirements

US Military Job Applications

However, Congress could change direction and allow DACA groups the opportunity to serve in the military. An enlisted member enters the Army as a Private. After completing basic training, the enlisted recruits advance to Private First Class. The next notable advancement is to a Noncommissioned Officer. The highest rank attainable in the Army is the five-star General of the Army. Often called a “five-star general”, the rank of General of the Army has historically been reserved for wartime use and is not currently active in the U.S. Army.
How to Apply to the Academy
There are five steps: knowing the basic application requirements for a nomination, completing a candidate questionnaire, completing the candidate kit, securing a nomination from a congressional representative, senator, or other qualifying authorities, and completing testing. General qualifications include:
- Between 17 but not yet 23 years of age by July 1 of the year admitted.
- A U.S. citizen at the time of enrolment (exception: foreign students nominated by agreement between the U.S. and another country).
- Not pregnant or legally obligated to support a child.
- An above-average high school or college academic record.
- Strong performance on the standardized American College Testing (ACT) assessment program exam or the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
- Be in good physical and mental health.
- Pass a medical exam.
- Above-average strength, endurance, and agility.
- Adequate performance on the USMA physical aptitude exam.
